If you’ve been in business for any length of time, you’ll know this truth: it’s not the glossy wins that define you, it’s how you navigate the messy middle.
Failure is not the opposite of success — it’s part of it. And while I could easily list highlights from my entrepreneurial journey, the moments that have truly shaped me are the ones that tested my patience, my resilience, and my commitment to building a business with integrity.
Today, I want to share a few of those moments, and how they continue to influence the way I run The Bilingual Lantern.
When “yes to everything” became unsustainable
Like many new entrepreneurs, I started out saying yes to every opportunity. Every client, every project, every request. I wanted to prove myself and build momentum.
The result? Burnout, blurred boundaries, and a service that wasn’t always delivered in the way I wanted it to be.
The lesson: success doesn’t come from saying yes to everything. It comes from saying yes to the right things. Now, I design my services with intentionality. I work with multilingual international entrepreneurs and founders who align with my values — people who want partnership, not just tasks ticked off. – and definitely no one who wants to micromanage me or my team!!
When French admin tried my patience
If you’ve ever dealt with French bureaucracy, you’ll know it’s not for the faint-hearted. My recent transition from EI to a company structure was far from smooth, with processes explained one way one week and differently the next.
There were moments when I wondered if it was worth it. But each obstacle forced me to get clearer, calmer, and more strategic.
The lesson: complexity doesn’t have to mean chaos. In my business, I now place a huge emphasis on systems, SOPs, and clear workflows — because I’ve lived the opposite. My clients benefit from structures that are stable, scalable, and human-first. I’m also encouraging my team to use SOPs, and ensure they are living breathing documents, as we tweak and perfect our processes and become ever more efficient.
When connection felt like shouting into the void
There was a period where I felt invisible online. I was posting, showing up, doing “all the right things,” but nothing landed. Little engagement, few leads, not much momentum.
It’s a lonely feeling when you’re pouring energy into content and it feels like nobody’s listening. And whilst it may not look like anyone’s watching, I’ve always been comforted by IRL conversations, where people have complimented me on my social media content.
The lesson: visibility is not about noise, it’s about resonance. I shifted from chasing algorithms to building authentic relationships. Networking, collaborations, and multilingual content that speaks directly to the audiences I serve. That shift doesn’t just bring clients — it brings community. Nothing beats IRL connections!
When the wrong hires taught me the right lessons
Not every collaboration has worked out. I’ve worked with people who didn’t align, who overpromised and underdelivered, or who weren’t ready to step into the roles I needed.
It was frustrating, sometimes costly, and always a blow to my confidence as a leader.
The lesson: protect the client experience above all else. At The Bilingual Lantern, I only bring in associates whose integrity and excellence I trust fully. Contracts are clear, communication is transparent, and quality is non-negotiable. Because my clients deserve the very best. I’ve also fully embraced the philosophy ‘hire slow, fire fast’, meaning that I take the time when onboarding a new associate, but no longer let things drag on when they’re not working out.
Why these challenges matter to you
I share these not to dramatise failure, but to normalise it. Every entrepreneur I know has stumbled, doubted, and redefined their path along the way.
The difference isn’t in whether you fail — it’s in how you respond. Do you allow the challenge to shape you, sharpen you, and clarify your next steps? Or do you allow it to stop you?
For me, each misstep has been a turning point. They’ve shaped a business that is stronger, clearer, and more aligned than I could have imagined at the beginning.
And that’s why I do what I do at The Bilingual Lantern: to help entrepreneurs cut through the noise, build with clarity, and avoid some of the mistakes I’ve already learned the hard way.
Because while we can’t avoid challenges altogether, we can choose how we respond — and we don’t have to do it alone.
