How to choose the right online business consultant

Choosing the right online business consultant can make a real difference to how your business grows and evolves. But with so many people calling themselves ‘consultants’ or ‘mentors’ these days, it’s no wonder the search can feel a bit overwhelming. So how do you find someone who is the right fit for you and your business? Here are a few things to consider.

Get clear on your goals

Before you dive into Google searches and LinkedIn profiles, take a step back and think about what you really want. Are you trying to simplify your systems? Clarify your offers? Free up more time for yourself? The more specific you are, the easier it is to spot someone whose skills and style match what you’re looking for.

I’ve found that clients who come to me with even a rough sense of what they want to change often move forward more quickly. Clarity at the start helps shape the whole process.

Look for experience that matters

It’s not just about how long someone’s been in business—it’s whether they’ve worked with people like you, in contexts similar to yours. Have they helped someone with your kind of business model? Do they understand your market? Relevant experience often means they can see patterns and offer insights more quickly. Testimonials are one thing, but case studies show real outcomes – and how someone works in practice.

Ask about their approach

You might also ask: Where did they learn their craft? Does their background give you confidence?

Take a look at their website, their posts, their content. Are they sharing helpful insights? Do they feel grounded and trustworthy? While a polished online presence isn’t everything, it can give you a sense of how they think and whether their values align with yours.

Weigh up value, not just cost

Of course, budget matters—but think about the potential return, not just the price tag. A consultant who really understands your business can help you streamline, grow, and breathe more easily. That’s worth investing in.

I know from experience that it really is better to reach out sooner rather than later. Don’t wait until you’re burnt out before seeking help.  The time and energy you save—plus the momentum you gain—makes a real difference.

Trust your instincts

After all the research and conversations, how do you feel about the person? Can you imagine working with them, sharing the messy bits, celebrating the wins? That gut feeling often tells you a lot.

I believe good consulting is a partnership. When there's mutual trust and respect, the work flows better—and the results speak for themselves.
